What it is

Tirzepatide is a 39-amino-acid peptide built on the GIP hormone backbone and engineered to activate both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Like semaglutide, it carries a fatty-acid chain that gives it a weekly half-life.

What it's studied for

Activating two incretin pathways at once strengthens insulin response to meals, slows gastric emptying and reduces appetite signaling. Research suggests the GIP component adds to the effect on fat tissue and insulin sensitivity.

What to expect from the research

Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation) were most common in trials, mainly during dose escalation. Labeling carries the same thyroid C-cell boxed warning as other GLP-1 agents. Evidence level: FDA-approved molecule.
